Cuartel de Ballajá
El Cuartel de Ballajá originally served as barracks
for the Spanish military. It housed Spanish soldiers and their families
from 1864 to 1898. After the end of the Spanish-American War, it became
quarters for the US Military until 1939. It also served a military
hospital during World War II. It was bought by the Government of Puerto
Rico in 1976 for cultural purposes and it was reopened in 1993 after extensive
renovations. It is currently the home of several cultural organizations,
including the Museo Las Américas.
